The Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Center (CSC) was established in the 1960s by the eminent space scientist that it is named after. The center works towards popularizing Science and Mathematics education among students, teachers and the general public. It is like a node holding a wide range of planes together – art, science, educational institutes and universities of architecture and engineering. The existing center has laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Computers and Rocketry apart from a library, workshop and administration facilities.

In the 5o years since it was founded, the center has been through numerous paradigm shifts in Science and Technology. The founder envisioned it to provide for an innovative learning environment to the city at large. But based on discussions with the present Director as well as careful consideration of what the center lacks today, there seems to be a need to expand it by adding intervening spaces catering to outreach for the center. Hence, the proposed expansion incorporates new functions like an innovation corner, multiple exhibition spaces of varying typologies, an auditorium and a planetarium.

typologies, an auditorium and a planetarium. The key goal of this project is to make the center less formal, more porous and fluid in the context of its relationship with the city and its people. This intervention intends to add an informal dimension to the center, which is experienced as a continuation of the existing in terms of materialistic and non-materialistic value. As an architectural presence, the extension attempts to draw from the existing context, at the same time defines its own character.
