THE FOCUS of this studio was to engage students in key issues and approaches to urban design through multiple design problems. Students were free to pick projects of different scales and complexities and set their own design goals and requirements.

Indian cities are growing at a substantial rate and increasing population affects built areas while causing further urban sprawl. The need of the hour is to understand and focus on the effects of this phenomenon on our cities keeping in view its livability and vitality. We need to acknowledge the fact that cities cannot and should not extend their limits endlessly.

This project looks at possibilities of renewal and redevelopment within the functioning city. Increasingly, our cities will witness such internal changes which provide opportunities for re-imagining the city.

An urban intervention is proposed on a private piece of land in the green belt of Ahmedabad, near Rajivnagar. Some part of this land is occupied for squatter settlements. A metro station, connecting the site to Ashram road, is also proposed. In such projects, usually the squatter settlements are relocated to the outskirts of the city and such vacant plots are developed for elite people.

To create a walkable neighborhood which encourages community living, thus making it more inclusive and socially cohesive. There is a lack of public open spaces at neighborhood level, as most of these are occupied by gated communities, thus creating fragmented pattern in the city. To address this issue the project proposes an interconnected open space network for place making.

The master plan demonstrates -

  • how public areas – institution, market  and public garden are connected to the metro station along with open spaces at neighborhood level.
  • how a diverse and lively neighborhood can be created using mixed land use.
