ADAJAN- A NEW URBAN DESTINATION , SURAT

The rate of Urbanisation seen today has never been like before. The rapid development pressures are causing our cities to expand horizontally and vertically. Therefore it becomes very important to manage urban expansions in both ‘brownfield’ and ‘greenfield’ sites. The tasks becomes more difficult in a brownfield where the city already lives and functions and the upgradation needs to be done surgically. The studio aimed at understanding current models of urban expansion & real estate development in cities in India and outside at both micro and macro level. It was important to understand the factors influencing the development potential of the area, including – Existing developments & land uses – Existing real estate market & price contours at macro & micro level – Upcoming developments & building typology in surrounding areas. The objective was to develop a spatial plan to guide the growth of the brownfield city through an appropriate development, creating win-win situation through equitable distribution of infrastructure costs & increased values. The site of Adajan, Surat here was looked as a demonstrative case to understand the redevelopment of an area through the mechanism of a Local Area Plan.
