An Approach towards Social Justice

“Social Justice is a term that eliminates the prejudices in society & promotes equal opportunities for people of different class in all spheres of social, economic and physical aspects.” A City is made up of spaces with diverse sets of people, needs & ambitions. For a healthy growth of the City, every citizen must receive equal chances to claim its ‘Right to the City’ for its personal as well as social development. Social Justice is a broader concept based on norms which doesn’t take into consideration the location theory but it can be interlinked with geographical analysis of a place to draw out inferences. Study is based on current conditions irrespective of past situations. However, to get an idea of location brief evolutionary study is taken into consideration. As per the studio brief of Understanding the City – precinct located in Vasna & Paldi is taken up for study purpose. Portfolio begins with the identification of precinct on the map of Ahmedabad and its brief historical evolution from the time it was annexed into Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Portfolio is further divided on the basis of economic and physical criteria. Economic aspect helps in classifying people of different classes through income and expenditure pattern, and travel behavior pattern. Physical aspect helps in understanding the distribution of resources available like built spaces, transportation modes and mediums, infrastructure and public spaces. Precinct is located in south-western part of Ahmedabad. Due to its distance from the Sabarmati River, its development started late around 1960s after the AMC boundary was redrawn to include Vasna. Formation of Gujarat state led to the insurgence of heavy migration in the City from rural areas. It was also the time when east Ahmedabad had come to a point of saturation, which encouraged elite class people to find alternate land plots for settlement far from the crowded Old City.
