Throughout human history, people have settled the land based on two fundamental desires, to be both in motion and in place. The expansive scale of cities since the Industrial Revolution demanded greater concentrations of workers living within cities in order to service the labour needs of emerging businesses. The expansion of any city is driven by either, Transit-Oriented Development or development-oriented transit. This compilation is an attempt to understand the 1 sq.km Precinct of Ranip through the two stages of Transit-Oriented Development and development-oriented transit. The study is done as a part of Understanding the city studio by observing and mapping the two zones divided in Physical and social characteristics moulded by the development policies. The study gives a clear picture of how an urban fringe suburbanizes and then turns into an important node of the city.
