Streets as line of diversity

Streets in a city trigger major form of physical development and public space. Evolution and importance on roads in a particular city defines not only its trade and commerce but also on connectivity and possibility of cultural exchange. To represent the precinct, I am considering streets their evolution as the lens. Structure: East Ahmedabad history dates back to its physical connectivity with Surat and Mumbai. With the first textile mill starting in 1861 the economy of the city flourished creating alot of migration and congestion in the east. Second important physical attribute the city craved was the ellisbridge giving an opportunity to the elites to shift to the west. Here on, in the west new institutional development triggered, further increasing the influx of migrants congesting the west core. The horizontal development of the city has been in radial form connected by a ring road at each level of its expansion. Chandlodiya’s development started at the intermediate level i.e in the year of 2006. With need of more affordable housing in the city agricultural plots got converted to non-agricultural. Main reason of this possibility was the approval of the TP Scheme in 2006. Physically development triggered due to the development of primary and tertiary streets improving the accessibilities. Urbanization in chandlodiya was pioneered in 2006 by 3 streets -sayona city road, dharti cross road and momnay nagar road cutting the site. Along with a need of public space chandlodiya lake which use to be the heart of the urban villages settled in the periphery was redeveloped in to a promenade changing the quality of realm attracting a lot of informal economy eventually. With infrastructure development the rates of land prices went higher and the FSI increased. Residential apartments started to influx in the west part of precinct creating a direct contrast. These changes further generated more jobs and contributed better economically creating a complete diversity in the livelihood with a clear ‘line of diversity’ in the precinct. I hereby have tried to show the transformed diversity by the evolution major physical parameters.
