1) Enhancing water quality 2) Conserving water resources

Water project:In Bhuj people are facing drinking water quality issue because of non functional water treatment plant and high TDS in ground water. They purchase water from private bottled water supplier which increases their monthly expense on water. This issue can be resolved by starting up existing non functional water treatment plant (WTP) and by setting up decentralized WTP from where people can purchase water on the half rate of existing. BNP is supplying 52% surface (Narmada: not own source) and 48% ground water (own source). To be a water secure city there is an immediate need to conserve water resource by catchment protection, regulating ground water extraction and improving ground water level and quality by participatory ground water management approach.

1.Existing water Quality issue:Because of non functional Centralized WTP and spot chlorination at sumps which is not enough because supplied water contains high TDS,

Project1.1 : O&M contact to restart centralized Water Treatment Plant(WTP)

Project 1.2: Decentralized WTP For slum and non slum areas of Bhuj served only with ground water having high TDS(>2000: Non drinkable)

Learning from Cas study: Ahmedabad, proposed water ATMs for slum pocket for setting up community managed water treatment plant by Sarvajal organization

2. Issue in ground water quality of Bhuj: High TDS content

Project 2.1: Policy intervention to control ground water extraction in Bhuj and monitor ground water recharge through rain water harvesting and formulating one Ground water Monitoring Cell which will manage the data, aware people and give technical guidance to citizens to construct a rechare structure.

Project 2.2: Regularize private water market to control ground water extraction and promote ground water recharge for environmental benefits

Project 2.3 To revive existing non functional borewells to avoid more spending on construction of new borewells and recharge ground water table

3. Encroachment on streamlines of traditional lake catchment because of new development. No initiatives or incentives to protect catchment

Project 3.:Conserve catchment of lake to make Bhuj water secure because through these streamlines main big lakes of Bhuj will wt water.Lakes majorly recharges ground water.
