Bhuj have a very vast evolutionary historic background of its lakes and over the years disappearance and deterioration of lakes in Bhuj has been noted. There are total 44 lakes falling in the boundary of Bhuj Area Development Authority (BHADA) out which 20 lakes are notified bodies demarcated in development plan and 24 lakes have problems like encroachment and pollution.Decreasing holding capacity of Hamirsar lakelocated in the heart of city.  Pragsar lake which became flat land after 2001 earthquake because of debris dumping in it.These are been the major reasons for 2011 floods in Bhuj.
