Improving street network & overall accessibility

In our cities, street network is a fundamental framework that connect people to each other and to destination. Street networks are not just about transportation and infrastructure, but also about the movement of people and goods. They foster economic activity at larger scale and provide public space for human interaction from a scale of neighbourhood level. Street networks provides background setting for commercial activirties, social interaction and the prime focus of street networks is to serve people and society. Street networks are backbone upon which communities are built and they provide better accessiblity through direct routes But today the concept of street development is majorly concentrated on widely spaced large arterials with smaller hierarchy of streets that are rarely connected. Such type of street networks makes difficult for people who want to travel by walking, cycling or use public transportation because of long trips to reach their destinations. It is also difficult for public to reach such neighbourhood where there is no proper connected street network. Such concerns encouraging people to choose private vehicles to travel even shorter distances. Connecting only major streets for traffic movement is also leading to traffic congestion whereas a connected network of all streets can disperse the traffic by reducing traffic congestion, distance travelled, travel delays and ease the movement of vehicles. Towards increasing urbanization we must ensure that our cities and towns are safe, pleasant and livable. So in order to address the overall issues, it is necessary to look into street network and plan for a well-connected streets. Because, a well-connected street network improve walkability and mobility that allows people to travel with many alternative options by providing different directions, modes to reach destinations.
