DOCOMOMO

Architecture is masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light, light and shade reveals the forms. The composition of the different masses placed in presence of light and the composition of the light which falls on the mass and it creates the shadow on the other side and forms its own shadow on the ground or on the other mass reveals its own shape and identity. The site is exactly opposite to the CEPT campus and is weaved in the fabric of the most well known modern buildings. The program given to us is DOCOMOMO (documentation and conservation of the modern monument) institution which try to conserve modern buildings by understanding and using the principles of the masters(Louis Kahn and Le Corbusier) in the design project. Series of exercises were done to understand their principles. For example, my principles were mass and light, so to understand how he places different masses with one another and different quality of light for the different kind of functions and how should I use them in this weather condition and with what function. While decoding the plans of Le Corbusier the fine grid was formed which helped me to do massing of the institute. As there is human tendency to see new things I came up with a different shape of the building. In terms of activities learning center, library, studio, workshop, and lecture room are kept together and cafe is separated. It just gives the idea that a particular kind of activities are held together. The building looks like a sculpture on flat land.
