DEFINING EDGE AS A MEMBRANE

Referring to the paper by Richard Sennett, the edge of an open city has the quality of membrane where limited exchange of material happens. The characteristics of a membrane is 1. The solid wall has to have piercing 2. Crinkling of the streets 3. Sociable sound. It can be said that streets play major role in proving edge as membrane, where similar qualities can be seen and observations can be made such as 1. Crinkling of street allows limited Visual Connection 2. Narrow Streets filters the traffics noise from the main road, thus providing sociable sound. 3. Proportion of street limits vehicular movement and frequency of outsiders. All these qualities were seen in some of the streets and not all. The outsiders did enter the streets which had narrow openings, because of the presence of commercial shops or garages- which acted like an attracter point. Whereas there were streets which were repulsive to the outsiders where the whole street was used as a private space.
