THE PURPOSE OF ARCHITECTURE

Envisioning ideas is central to the architectural practice. In this studio we shall explore methods and ways to visualise spatial set ups within the built environment. Through a series of weekly exercises the studio will develop skills and discover tools to visually represent their observations. Further, through readings, discussions and excursions, the unit will explore historical and contemporary forms formats of visualisations. Study of paintings, renderings, sketches and models will intensely be pursued. The making of drawings both technical and artistic is central to visual studies, the studio will invite experts to conduct workshops to develop these skill sets. Visits to architecturally significant places of interest to our study will be organised. Think Mandu or Fatehpur Sikri or Badami ! To communicate the ideas expressed in the visuals is of great importance to the architect. The ability to explain concepts and ideas is essential to convey a complete picture of the design intent. The studio’s parallel focus will be on developing this ability by enhancing the linguistic capacity of the unit by introducing them to literature and film that helps expand the vocabulary and stylistic gamut of each student and for them to appreciate the breadth and value of the architectural lexicon. This combined power of the visual representations and oral plus written communication is what makes architectural ideas effective and the architect an articulate professional a communicator of ideas and possibilities. The Purpose of Architecture arises out of the multiple scenarios that any design intervention seeks to address, that which the architect considers to propose and that which satisfies the objectives intended. The manifestation of the parts of our built environments thus come into being. A critical understanding of these processes and powers that lead to eventual architectural decisions is expected of the architect. We shall be on a journey to discover this in our unit.
