Learning Curve (Designing a Creche)

As the old city, Ahmadabad is overcrowded there is a need to go underground for building new spaces. For a children’s creche, the site used is the fruit market being the most convenient for the parents to go. In order to reciprocate the underground space with the above buildings, the column grid of fruit market is taken down as it is, only increasing the column width for structural stability. The grid is a major component of all the historic places in the old city and people are used to such type of spaces. Not to completely replicate the upper building, the grid is accompanied by free form spaces which are divided for children’s activities. They are attractive and fun. Different curves demarcate different spaces. For the children to have an experience of different volumes, the curves are on different heights connected by steps or ramps such that children can play and use them as seating area and to play.
