This project aims at exploring potential of a brown-field site in the eastern part of Ahmedabad. It proposes a redevelopment project for a closed textile mill and chawls. Textile mills and chawls have played a major role in the history of Ahmedabad. The prosperity of the textile industry was the mainstay of the city's economy. Textile mills employed thousands of people from across the state and these people were living in the chawls (Chalis). These chawls also carry history of this revolution due to industries and also disruptions due to riots. Over a period, many of these chawls have gone through change of legal status, poor physical conditions etc. These sites have not been used to their full potential when there is a need of more land in the city. An opportunity exists for the land owners to derive substantial benefits by redeveloping the land parcels as per the micro-market requirements. This project tries to explore development potential of such sites (Closed textile mill lands, chawls) with the existing regulations and policies.
