CITY E-WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN

E-waste forms a special part of the SWM cycle and has a separate dedicated E-waste Rules mandated to be followed. There is a surge in the quantities of e-waste being produced, and with this comes the need for an effective e-waste management plan. The discarded or old electronic devices contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium, which demand proper processing is necessary prior its scientific disposal. Almost 87% of the total e-waste produced in Vadodara is handled by the informal sector where it is recycled without any consideration to health and the environment. Open burning, unhygienic work spaces and non-scientific treatment of chemicals are typical of these operations, where groups comprising of children and women are employed. The lack of safety employed while at this is a matter of concern. There is a need to devise programs to make sure that the hazardous elements of e-waste are not released into the environment. Also, the ‘resource’ element present in e-waste is rising as a potential business sector nowadays. Thus, this project is helping achieve the theme of ‘waste as a resource’ of the vision for SWM in Vadodara.
