Ellis Bridge: Transformation of a City Centre

The Resurrection of the Ellis bridge from a glorified historic background to a Central Business District is dealt in the study with how an ordinary bridge which connects the east and west of Ahmedabad becomes the identity to the city. The western part of Ahmedabad especially Paldi region, the development happened in early stages itself. The historic transformations in urban and social factors, that helps the precinct to maintain its importance in the city level. The facilitating factors that enhance the precinct's character are decided by the physical and social factors. The built fabric and land characteristics show the vulnerability of the precinct for the development. The infrastructure facilities that are an essential part of the livability factors of the city. These changes affect the demographic character of the precinct. The spatial and behavioral characteristics of the areas within the precinct dealt with in the study. The street activities and related behavioral changes of the space help us to understand the essence of the precinct. The economic status of the precinct is detailed out with the housing conditions and livelihood characters. It is identified that the economic source of the precinct is mainly from the commercial activities. The livelihood characteristics of the precinct and its relation with the public transport systems. The proposed metro project and the rail gauge conversion are main features that appreciate the development. The study concluded by finding out the factors that make the Ellis Bridge as CBD. From the analysis, it is observed that the connective infrastructure development is happening to the Ellis Bridge. Transport oriented development is the dominant factor that identified from the study. All the factors like physical and social factors are interconnected to each other.
