In the past two decades there have been dramatic changes in the fortunes of cities and regions. There is a growing realization that cities are cultural and economic turn through emphasis on meaning and identity of social being. At the same time understanding that cities can be liveable only when the neighbourhoods are safe and interactive in nature. The neighbourhoods are smaller units of bigger cities. Hence, in order to understand a city, it is important to understand how the neighbourhood function and how they perform. To study the patterns between people and urban environment. The aim of the document “Understanding the City” is to take forward the study of neighbourhood “Navarangpura”. An urban analysis to allow neighbourhood to be viewed from “liveability” perspective through the lens of Social aspects, Economic aspects, Habitat, Urban mobility & Infrastructure. The concept embraces cognate notions such as quality of life, character of the place, social and cultural expression. The idea of liveability bridges many of the other concepts. It refers to the extent to which the attributes of a particular place can, as they interact with one another and with activities in other places, satisfy residents by meeting their economic, social, and cultural needs, promoting their health and well-being. The method addresses social and economic change in from household to state. It also serves the interest from David Bryne's and Jane Jacob’s perspective of liveable cities. Through the document, the study accounts the questions of liveability such as: Is neighbourhood an amalgamation of people-oriented uses? Does it represent rigid society? Do diverse uses keep neighbourhood in constant use? Are buildings interactive with humans? Do the neighbourhood establish sense of trust & belonging and form community with eyes & ears or Do streets represent Chaos & danger? Whether or not the neighbourhood is affordable? The document tries to understand the middle ground that has emerged between physical development and social grounds.
