“Understanding the city ” studio aimed to develop intimate understanding of a city and equipped students with conceptual, methodological, analytical, and communication skills necessary for becoming a professional urbanist. The studio focused on an evidence based approach, mainly through personal interviews and surveys, for framing and analysing complex urban situations and problems taking the case of Ahmedabad. Urban spatial analysis was conducted evidently to understand a given area and develop an understanding layer by layer. Extensive mapping was done by measuring the complexities of the built environment. Engagements with communities helped support facts and develop a better perspective about why things are the way they are. Each student was assigned a one square kilometre area of Ahmedabad. It was analysed, mapped and surveyed thoroughly to generate maps. The precinct studied here is a juncture of parts of Rajivnagar, Ayojannagar, Vasna and Jivrajpark. It is also a juncture of 132 feet ring road, Metro Railway Lines and AMTS route. The precinct therefore is a complex juxtaposition of different layers affected by many determinants. It is ruptured within because of the same connectivity routes that connect it to the rest of the city. These routes are playing a major role is shaping the precinct.
