The portfolio on the metamorphosis of Krishnanagar is a part of the first semester foundation studio named “Understanding the city”. This studio, under the Master’s in planning programme utilizes the city of Ahmedabad as its textbook and workspace. It helps in understanding the basic planning principles in different stratas of the urban form and lifestyle choices through evidence based analytical approach The city of Ahmedabad is renowned for its history of rise and fall of textile mills. The precinct of Krishnanagar, covering one square kilometre area, is located at east Ahmedabad and share the same lineage of industrial development and their impact on the built form and eventually the life of its residents The story of Krishnanagar starts with the introduction of its first textile mill in 1970, thus providing employment opportunities. The mills started shutting down by 2005. The focus of the study is the evolution brought about by these changes with respect to landforms, built fabric, choices of people regarding housing, job centres and transit mode along with other parameters. This portfolio analyses the effect of built forms in the everyday life of the people. The conclusions are derived with the help of sample surveys collected from the precinct The analysis derived can be directly correlated to the urban characteristics of East Ahmedabad as a whole. It also helps in understanding the impact planning has in everyday actions and choices affecting the shift in lifestyle.
