Chandkheda lies in the north-western part of the 7th largest metropolitan city Ahmedabad. The aim is to focus on research-based approaches for framing and analysing complex urban situation and problems. To understand the city parameters such as Housing characteristics, travel behaviour, building use, water supply and sanitation, jantri rates, floorspace index, etc. were studied. Chandkheda Railway Station divides the area into two parts. On one side of the transit line lies the maximum number of row houses whereas on the other side it is mostly dominated by apartments and semi-detached housing units. Both the side differs in terms of infrastructure development, floor space index, ground coverage, etc. The understanding of the process five principles (paths, district, landmark, nodes and edges) of the book Image of the city by author Kevin Lynch is also studied. The book describes the paths as the streets, walkway, transit line, district as the medium to large sections of city identifying some character, nodes as strategic points in the city, the landmark as point reference, edges as boundaries between the two phases. Through his observation social and economic background of the people’s livelihood, an area was not been characterized. The process of documenting is not only based on the 5 principles but also on people’s livelihood. Moreover, to understand the city in better ways different places of Ahmedabad was observed and documented.
