The exercise of Understanding the city studio aimed on developing intimate understanding of a city by studying the urban cell if 1sqkm and analysing its context, issues and situations. Now as it is significantly proven fact that Indian cities are expanding at the rate which has happened never before and with city centres saturating, this growth pattern is observed to move outwards. This makes it evident that the periphery of cities demands special attention in terms of how it is evolving. Here the Characteristics of precinct at the periphery of Ahmedabad are studied by studying the urban cell of 1sqkm located at Chandkheda, North-western fringe of Ahmedabad. This was done by starting from observing and mapping its growth. This is followed by the aspects which determined the dominant landuse and built typology as we see it today. Later we document how these land characteristics mould streets and affects the demand and availability of Infrastructure in precinct. However when we observe present scenario, major part of land is privately owned and therefore there are very few designated places for public interactions and gatherings. This will give us a holistic picture of how is this fringe of Ahmedabad developing, what kind of community is thriving there and what are probable issues and scopes that will likely impact its development pattern in future.
