The portfolio “An Island within the City” is a comprehensive detailed study of an area called New Ranip. New Ranip is one of the areas located on the north-western fringes of the city Ahmedabad. There are many other areas in these fringes such as Chandlodia, Chandkheda, Bhopal, etc., but there is one condition that makes it stand out of all these examples, is its strategic location being surrounded by railway tracks from all the sides. Hence, this condition is making it an island, one of its own kinds in the whole city. To understand the island effect on the land, property, residents and market, each topic needs to be study thoroughly. Thus, the precinct is been questioned continually on its evolution over the years, urban morphology, land and building characteristics, infrastructure facilities and the economy of the precinct maintained. It is also very interesting to understand which section of population is choosing this area and what are their lifestyle and behavior. It can be easily derived, has it not been an island, New Ranip could have been in very different situation, so it is very important to understand the impact of island condition on its development.
