A reappropriation of a neighbourhood’s market to suit needs of today’s times: Built as a planned neighbourhood market in 1962, the project is an attempt to reappropriate the scale of the market, to suit the times of today, along with keeping the core values and humanity of the commercial exchange in this space intact. The neighbourhood started off as one, with a diverse community coming from various backgrounds and locations within the country, the people being working professionals and educationists of the time. The marketplace hence, was a reflection of this very character. Through the years, Jayanagar has gone through enormous change owing to the economic forces at play in a prime location like the one mentioned. The neighbourhood has seen a great depletion of this character, and the marketplace, a gradual downfall in accessibility and a consumer base which recognizes its worth. The project is an attempt to bring back the value into the marketplace, alongside acknowledging the economic forces at play in the given scenario. The model is a proposal to cross subsidise the neighbourhood scale commerce with other retail and business spaces which are high-end. Without the FSI and market cost considerations, the project focuses on architectural qualities of the porous neighbourhood market alongside paying heed to the allocation of appropriate densities at the core.
