WHAT MATTERS THE MOST- Prefrences in Affordable Housing

The study was the part of the exercise – ‘Theorising Contemporary Practice’ that engages with the heart of architectural production- the process of decision making in Affordable Housing in Ahmedabad. It focused on and compare processes in two on-going housing projects in Ahmedabad. Exercises included fieldwork on construction sites and in architectural design offices to map out the various aspects such as client discussions, conceptual processes, regulatory conditions, technological decisions, construction issues, and negotiation of site contingencies.

This amongst five exploratory studies for the alike project brief explores the commodification and commercialization, of Affordable housing in Ahmedabad through the preferences made in terms of developing, selling and buying the house while involving three important actors – architect, builder and home owner. While there is a vast ecology of actors involved the study focuses on these three, their linkages vis a vis the negotiations between them; their influences on the preferences made in housing projects while focusing on the factors influencing them.
