Designing a structure: Wood and Brick

BRTS BUS STAND: PROGRAM BRIEF The project revolves around re-designing the L.D. Engineering BRTS bus stand. The structure needs to be changed with respect to the new material palette. The function is the same being that of a bus stand. The site was studied thoroughly before designing the structure. Various case studies were done to understand structures and application of forces on it. The process included the study of different structures, implementing its understanding in designing the new structure using different material set.

CANTEEN: PROJECT BRIEFThe project revolves around designing a canteen for 40 college students. The structure was to be designed using brick as the primary material and concrete as the secondary material. The site was hypothetical.

Details of the repeating module.

STRUCTURE BRIEF: The primary material is wood and secondary material is steel. All the structural elements have been designed using wood. Therefore, the best possible way of using wood is in its compression and tension together. Keeping this in mind, the roof has been made using a truss system. To increase the structural performance, truss beam has been used. A repeating module therefore forms the entire structure.

Elements used: 1.) Barrel vault truss was used as roof structure. The choice of barrel vault truss over a normal truss was to achieve a larger volume which gets broken by the tying member in a normal truss. 2.) For the roofing systems wooden planks were used which were joined using tongue and groove joinery. 3.) The structure is a wooden frame structure, wherein customized steel joinery is used to strengthen the structure.

Design stands: 1.) The columns have an inclined form, that protrudes outward. 2.) This form is critical in carrying the load of the roof. 3.)Only some part of the heavy masonry structure is being used for the load transfer and therefore the part that is inclined actually becomes non-structural. 4.) For structural stability of the built, buttresses can also be added.
