AUXETICS

This work suggests a possible direction towards the development of a surface system based on a particular class of structure that have the intrinsic capacities to expand when stretched, contract when compressed and to display unconventional curvatures when bent. This class of materials and structures have been discovered in 1800 but only in 1991, a scientist Ken Evans gave them the name ‘Auxetics’ deriving from the greek word auxetikas “that tends to increase” The design research is divided into three parts, firstly the property of the material and behaviour of the pattern is studied, secondly a structural sytem to give a form to the auxetic membrane is devised and lastly analysis of the derived forms along with its appropriation in different design scenarios are discussed.
