Metropolitan Open Space Systems as mediators of socio-ecological metabolism
An urban metropolis represents a very large colony of human habitants, where people come together to form a large assembly to LIVE, WORK and GROW together. Along with its inhabitants the metropolis evolves like a large living organism where the human populace becomes the primary and dominant inhabitant flourishing over a host of physical infrastructure, institutions and residential settlement. However, like any living breathing organism, sustained resources and energy systems are necessary for the city’s metabolism to function and prevail. This grand human accumulation being a result of collective decision of living together also requires sustained communication and exchange amongst its inhabitants, necessitating the spatial demands for Cultural and Social interactions. Hence, within the grand organism of the metropolis, Open Spaces serve as a ‘resource’ for preserving the metabolic activity and also function as a ‘network’ for social, cultural and natural systems to flourish.
