Neighborhood Renewal - reDevelopment of Gandhinagar

The studio focuses on the design of urban regeneration within the city. The design problem explores the development potential of an open urban land within an existing city through design of a new neighborhood. The project is based on a premise that often in cites, redevelopment opportunities arise due to availability of lands such as underutilized land, defunct mill lands, urban slum rehabilitation projects, rehabilitation of large urban infrastructure such as old railway station, airports etc. Through their design projects, students will explore the approaches to neighborhood design with a focus on contextual relevance, master plan framework, urban block strategies, character of urban form, building typologies, and population densities. The concept and design resolution of a public place will be a significant component of the studio project outcome. The issues of livability, safety, legibility, imageability, diversity, and environmental sustainability will be the some of the recurrent themes discussed in context of each individual design proposal throughout the semester. To facilitate these learning goals, the studio assumes the area of intervention to be under single ownership (typically local governments) where students will assume the role of an urban designer working for the local government to design this project.
