The portfolio is part of foundation studio in Master of Urban Planning. The aim of the studio is to introduce basic planning parameters and their implications in a practical setting, relating them to the social, economic and environmental context. The area considered for the study is of 1 sq.km in the Khokhra ward in east Ahmedabad with the focus is of analyzing and conveying viewpoints in a qualitative way. Khokhra is a colonial-era industrial development specifically known for its textile mills. With 75.7% of land and 93.5% of the buildings used for residential purpose, the precinct has a population density of 558 people per hectare. With the expansion of the city, the urbanization of east Ahmedabad has become essential to accommodate the need of the growing population. Due to this, many interventions were done such as the introduction of educational institutions, recreational facilities, and special economic zones. These changes have direct as well as indirect implication on the precinct. The portfolio explores how a residential area with high population density has evolved and is still in process of transfiguring itself. It also provides an insight about the junctures that lead to the present state of the precinct, how people perceived and adapted to these changes, the lifestyle of the people, their livelihood, income, expenditures and the activities they involve in and accessibility to basic infrastructural services. It further talks about possible intervention areas for the future and its economic feasibility.
