Dissecting the Continuum, Case of Usmanpura : Ahmedabad

The study profiles Ahmedabad city, the seventh largest metropolis of India. The area under study is Usmanpura, located on the banks of Sabarmati river. The study deals with the evolution of an under-developed river bank to a thriving proposed CBD zone that has become an identity to the city. The major Transformation in the precinct was the construction of the Sabarmati Riverfront. It is observed that the parameters vary drastically within 1 Sq.km as we move from West to East. The east is a thriving hub of small scale Industries, while the west is a residential zone. The west bank of riverfront is used for recreation and generating economy, while the east is majorly used for socializing. Economy on the west is through corporate and commercial sector, while in the east small scale Industries generate economy. Lifestyle and livability conditions also vary to a large extent from west to east. From the study it is observed that the development of riverfront served as a catalyst for the development of Usmanpura and Shahpur area. All factors of development are linked to one another and as a result connected factors like social and economic, physical and livability conditions also improved.
