Dudheshwar : Interpreting Development and Culture

Dudheshwar,  in the 1990s emerged as a center of textile mills and smaller supporting industries . With the industrial revolution taking over the city , the work culture completely transformed. The small commercial settlements and home based industries came up followed by the service sector. With the development of roads and bridges, the precinct had a link to the other parts of the city where people could go and work. However, this wave of development is not consistent in all parts of the precinct. The parts where industries and mills once existed, have a high population density with poor economic conditions, inadequate infrastructure , lesser job centers and low standard of living. Dudheshwar is proposed as a part of the upcoming CBD . Its transformation it into a CBD will affect the life and culture of the people in a huge way. The typical community culture, of the precinct , with vibrant heritage , cultural , religious values along with the built form and characteristics will be exposed to change. The study undertaken helps understand the different layers of development , while throwing light on its unique history and culture, keeping the socio economic status of people as a backdrop. It also aims at tracing the transformation that might lead to a completely new picture, of the area , or might turn it into a ghetto.
