EVERYDAY AT SABARMATI

The site of the project is the plot of Arya Samaj in Juna Vadaj. Stretched between two communities of fine urban fabric in its width, the plot seems to extends the local road flowing from the ashram road bus terminal to the riverfront road in its length.
The project proposes a cluster of programs such as primary school, day care unit, gym, vocational training unit, library with reading spaces, multipurpose marriage hall, community office and shops organized at appropriate levels underground around a sequence of gradually descending courtyards that eventually connect to the lowerpromenade. The roof of the complex acts as a plaza open to appropriation by the residents of the neighbourhood. In doing so, the project attempts to cater to the economic and social intentions of the locals while simultaneously addressing issues of access, walkability, degree of publicness and political expression at the sabarmati riverfront.
