TERI, Jaisalmer

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES INSTITUTE SPECIALIZES IN THE FIELDS OF ENERGY , ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT. HERE, IN JAISALMER, THE VERNACULAR TECHNIQUE OF BUILDING IS OF USING MAINLY SANDSTONE, WHEREAS, IN THIS CASE, A NEW TECHNIQUE OF CONSTRUCTION , WHICH IS THAT OF VAULTS, HAS BEEN EXPLORED. THROUGH THIS NEW TECHNIQUE OF CONSTRUCTION, TERI IN JAISALMER MAKES THE LOCAL PEOPLE LEARN THAT THERE ARE NEWER WAYS OF OVERCOMING THE HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS OF THE CITY. A VAULT PROVIDES A HOT POCKET OF AIR ABOVE THE NORMAL VOLUME, AND THEREFORE KEEPS THE USABLE SPACE COOLER. IT ALSO LOOSES HEAT FASTER THAN A FLAT ROOF DUE TO INCREASE IN THE ROOF’S SURFACE AREA. THE SPACES IN THIS PROJECT HAVE BEEN DIVIDED SUCH THAT THE MAJOR PUBLIC SPACES ARE ON THE FIRST FLOOR, SEMI PRIVATE ONES ON THE GROUND FLOOR, AND PRIVATE ONES IN THE BASEMENT. LIVING SPACES SUCH AS GUEST ACCOMODATION AND SERVICE STAFF QUARTERS ARE SEPARATED FROM THE MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING BUT CONNECTED THROUGH A CORRIDOR. THE MAIN MATERIAL PALLETTE CONSISTS OF BRICK, RCC, LIME PLASTER, AND CHINA MOSAIC.
