Understanding the built heritage - Pol house

Being a world heritage site, Ahmedabad has many components of historical importance. Once such constituent is the community living inside the walled city of Ahmedabad. In the old city, this community living or ‘Pols’ have a shared wall which not only unite’s the house socially but has a structural importance. Another special feature of this housing typology is the use of timber in construction which is optimized for easy construction and involves traditional arts and crafts for joineries and structure. Together the combination of shared walls and the timber framed construction helps in sustaining the house and the housing in case of seisemic activity. All these factors contribute towards the social, historical, evidential and economic value to this unique housing typology and the house.
