With the sizes, material constitutions and techniques, informed by time tested practices, available resources, external influences such as the arrival of the colonists (during the latter half of the Maratha rule in Tanjore) and with the insurgence of materials such as wood, iron, bamboo, etc, the architectural expression of the Chatrams of Tanjore experienced a shift from the artisinal to the industrial, form heavy masonry load bearing walls, to lighter post beam structures with infill or partition walls. The project thus traces the trajectory of technology and how it has influenced the characteristics of the architecture of the Chatrams.
