Re- Imagining street markets of Kalupur

Articulated through a series of on site studies coupled with in depth group research exercises, this ‘immersive’ practical studio based course is focused on two sites in the historic city of Ahmadabad. The thematic purpose of the design is to generate opportunities of cultural exchange and learning that encourages students to develop a regeneration project within the given context while comparing their approaches to other case studies across the world. Along with a practical action based teaching approach, the studio proposes readings that will facilitate an understanding of urban form and typical issues that arise as a result of progressive urban growth and change. The studio debates on critical issues such as the relationship between history and context, the sense of place and the necessity of urban transformation which are fundamental for the acquisition of tools for design and research.
