A BAMBOO CHAIR FOR A PROPOSED DESIGN LIBRARYThe proposed design library is for SEWA Kalaruti of GUJARAT STATE WOMEN’S SEWA CO-OP. FEDERATION LTD. The Ahmedabad SEWA Kalakruti acts as a retail hub for different women artisans to promote, exhibit and sell their works. Artisans and customers negotiate and finalize sale orders; linking various marketing possibilities. The furniture designed is built from solid bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus), canvas and textile with Kutch mirror work. The furniture showcases the textiles crafts done at SEWA; without compromising the comfort of the user. The special features of this design are that it is durable, renewable and sustainable with a space to exhibit different textiles crafts. The textiles can be changed as per the requirement. The main idea was for a cradle – to – grave approach by using sustainable materials, better use of resourses and simpler making so it can be easier for mass production; include the local craftsmen in the process.
