CANTILEVER CHAIR IN BENT PLY Inspired from the great Marcel Breuer’s Cesca Chair and Michael Thonet’s Chair No. 14, this chair is a unique combination of cantilever chair in wood. The main challenge taken upon this chair is to make it cantilever but keeping it lightweight visually as well as physically and stable with least components and joineries. The material chosen to achieve that is Bent Ply. Bent Ply has the high strength, high impact resistance and flexibility according to the desired thickness. According to David Pye’s six requirements of Design, the main principle of the chair that is cantilever is kept as it is from Cesca Chair. The chair is geometrically related in terms of the curve achieved in the plan and elevation. The main attention given to the chair while keeping it cantilever was structure. In this chair the whole back and legs are made from a single component, which makes the two legs of the chair react on all forces applied from above. The base of the chair is such that it takes the weight by acting as a counter balance; also double legs holding the base increases the strength and holds the legs from splitting apart. Seat of the chair, which is a mirror of the base, is projected a little towards the front for the person to not hit their legs at the bottom. The back of the chair has the curve on the corners which is the material characteristic to keep the back as a single frame. Hence, the whole chair is minimalistic with a continuity being followed amongst the components.
