To activate a space, one of the most essential medium to utilize is light. Shadow which is a product of lighting, when harnessed properly, can create blissful and tranquil effects to animate any living space. The present study-site is Ahmedabad’s iconic ‘brutalist’ building ‘Sanskar Kendra’. The design aims to include living, animate spaces to facilitate human interactions and cultural exchanges and a space for generation and exchange of ideas. The proposal strives to demonstrate how the medium of lighting, when utilized sensibly, can transform dormant spaces into animate systems. Light as a medium to animate a space can be exhibited using various techniques such as, geometry of the spaces, layering of filtered light, provisioning perforations, specialized patterns etc. Further, user experiences can be enhanced by utilizing natural and artificial light elements that filters, reflects or refracts light from their surfaces. Thus, animate spaces could be perceived in multiple ways depending on the incidence of light. In the present study, various modes through which light enters a room is harnessed and experimented with in order to demarcate adjacent spaces that have different functions.
