Revitalizing Bopal through Transit Oriented Development

A city is identified by the character of its buildings, the services it provides and the population that it accommodates. The portfolio introduces you to the concept of micro-level planning which caters to the different layers of a city. The portfolio is primarily divided in to two main sections where the first section helps in understanding the concept of an area in Ahmedabad in different perspectives and the second section talks about brownfield development for a neighborhood in Bopal. The structure of the Development Plan Studio is such that it builds a liberal approach towards planning a city by the study of other national as well international cities to understand the strategic differences in city planning and also to understand the role of governing bodies in formulating planning mechanisms for an area. The purpose of the studio is to prepare a brownfield development scheme i.e Local Area Plan (LAP) for Bopal. Bopal lies in the western fringe of Ahmedabad city, outside the AMC boundary. It is surrounded by major growth centers and its proximity to these growth centres is developing the economic condition of the area. The major strength of the area is the presence of a BRTS corridor and the availability of vacant land. Gradually, Bopal is developing into a economic generic center due to the increase in the job opportunities in the area. People are considering Bopal as a place to reside due to low land rates and housing variability in certain areas. The portfolio engages you in understanding the development mechanism of an area in a city through the analysis and surveys of present conditions. At the same time, the process of making a development scheme for a LAP will be understood as one goes along.
