Revitalizing Bopal Through Transit Oriented Development

This studio was an introduction to various statutory and non-statutory microlevel planning mechanisms such as TPS, LAPs , TOD, Heritage, Smart City Area Based Development etc. It gave us the opportunity to explore beyond the conventional approaches to deliver plans that integrate multidisciplinary aspects to result in high quality environment. The first studio exercise was a case study to explore and built an understanding on the micro level planning mechanisms. The next exercise was a case study of Bopal, a municipality in Ahmedabad. The challenge was to consider the existing urban context of the region from landownership, land value, growth potential and exploring innovative modes of land development to achieve the desired urban character, street pattern, open spaces network and built form. A micro level plan, LAP was required to be prepared for the region which goes beyond conventional statutory plans, and which is not only focused on implementing a vision to create livable, well-served, high quality urban environments? but are also aimed to make the implementation economically viable for both the land owners and the authorities. This studio helped us to develop an understanding for evolving new approaches for land readjustment, plot amalgamation, implementation strategies, development model and regulations for a more equitable distribution of costs and benefits.
