The objective of the Urban Expansion studio was to make students aware of how planning in greenfield areas works. Throughout the course of the studio, we learnt various methods of managing land assets and different approaches towards planning a site using various case studies. For the main studio exercise, a site located around the Rajabhoj Airport in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh was chosen and the expected outcome was a Town Development Scheme, as they call it there. Through site visits and surveys, the existing situation analysis was taken up for Bhopal as a city and the site in particular as well. From the data collected and analyzed, a TDS was put into place. The key considerations for the same was to develop a concept that adhered to the local conditions of the city and that was backed up by existing laws and policies of the state. Along with a concepts and proposals, the entire TDS area was reconstituted and valuation for the same was done. As a result, through studying various approaches, a Town Development Scheme was prepared with a self-financing mechanism and key projects to trigger development at an otherwise dead location with high potential.
