Housing Strategy Studio aims at developing city-wide housing strategy to improve access to affordableanddecentshelterforallincomegroups.Accesstodecenthousingthatisaffordablefor alliskeyforahabitablecity.Citiesacrossthedevelopedanddevelopingcountriesaregrapplingwith varyingdegreesofhousingunaffordabilityasperthespecificsoflocallandandlabourmarkets.Issues such as inadequate delivery of serviced land in the periphery of the cities,irrational and counterproductivelandandbuildingregulationsthatimposehighcostsonhousingunitprice,other regulatory processes such as environmental clearances, RERA clearances,stamp duty and registration chargesimposeadditionaltimeandcostsonpriceofhousingunits.Asaconsequencemarketsare unable to provide units below a certain price range,leaving a large section of house holds in cities seekinghousingadjustmentsuncateredandforwhomaccesstoaffordablehousingremainscritical issue. On the other hand,governmentattemptstodirectlyprovideforpoorurbanhouseholdslivingin sub-standard and informal housing,through policies and programs which do not really reach the intended beneficiaries as they are often ill conceived,straight jacketed formulations,at the state and national level rather than at the local level.
