Panjarapol - Architectural Biography of a Neighborhood

The foundation studio of Architecture History and theory was conducted online because of the pandemic situation. We were asked to study and document the neighborhood of Pinjrapole (a pol cluster in the medieval old city of Ahmadabad, majorly occupied by Jain community). The entire semesters was divided into three modules. In the first module we were did an architectural historical and theoretical enquiry through the analysis of built environments and relevant archival materials. Second module of reflection and journaling was focused on investigating different forms of information and transforming our thoughts and observations into written forms of short essays. For the third module of constructing an architectural timeline, with available resources and relevant archival materials we were asked to develop an essay of 3000 words. The first two modules were complimenting to analyse the architecture, built typologies, materiality to understand the transformation of the neighborhood. The essay ‘modernization of domestic spaces in the neighbor of Pinjrapole was an attempt to investigate and theorize the architectural shifts over the time period.
