Strengthening Avifaunal Habitats

“Waterfowl Concentration in Gujrat during Winter is one of the highest in the country as the area falls on migratory route for the birds. Migratory Birds from Europe and Asia pass through the western part of the country to the India Plateau and they enjoy the varied habitats in the state. Many stay in Gujrat for the entire winter season and some move on to the Deccan Plateau. Again, during their reverse migration in March and April, birds stay at these wetlands for some time before their departure from the country to their breeding grounds.” Over 150 species of birds can be seen in THOL in a day during the peak winter season. (Gujrat, Perspectives of the future by Dr. R Swaminathan) Thol, which is 4 kms away from THE SITE and attracts around 144 species of Birds!!  The site has potential to attract and has carrying capacity to  become habitat for a lot of Bird species because of DIVERSE BIRD HABITATS- Deep Open Water, Emergent Aquatic Vegetation, Shallow Open Water, Muddy Habitat, Shore Land, Cultivations in Surrounding land, Fallow Lands and Woodland Habitats.Birds respond to a summation of many factors & habitat selection, which are characteristics of terrain, Nesting, feeding & drinking sites, Food availability and Other animals are important factors influencing habitat selection. So, Altering these habitats to strengthen them is the whole idea of this project.
