I.M.Pei’s graduation project guided by walter Gropius was a museum of chinese art in Shanghai. The design was an amalgamaion of a modernist building with chinese heritageand culture. The inspiration offer the structure and materialwas taken from Mies Van Der Rohe’s ‘Museum for a small city’.The Shanghai museum, ‘benifitting the dignity of Shanghai,’was intennded to replace an ‘inadequate structure’ in the Civic Centre, the plan of which was finished in 1933.
