The green in the brown kernel

The project attempts to create a farm-city inside the hard brown kernel of an abandoned industrial building. An ideal wishful miniature city, where the built takes a step back and creates soft edges and open encounters with the greens. A city having walkways, bridges, meandering paths, and courtyards amidst the green farms capes. Inspired by the grids of farmlands from which we source our food and farm produce and the grids of our cityscapes where built is predominant, this project attempts to provide a contrast by housing a GreenCity inside a Brown Production dysfunctional building. The project attempts to make a statement of reclaiming the lost, rejuvenating the old, and reviving the balance between the greens and the urban. I envision the enclosures having porous edges to be amongst the greens and extending the indoor-outdoor experiences. The walkways are imagined taking one through a journey of open spaces, semi-open, and the built. The bridges act as balconies to be amongst the foliage of the greens. The entire project sitting within the foliage of the existing roof trusses of the abandoned industrial building provides a metaphorical play of light and shadow from the tree foliage. The ambition of such a project is to bring people closer to farms, to learn and value the production of food and turn city dwellers into eco-warriors. The project offers gardening experiences and learning workshops, fresh produce, live kitchens and juice counters, a farmer’s market, and a technology driven model green production unit using hydroponic and aquaponic methods.
