Mass Housing: From Utopias to Heterotopias

Nehrunagar, Surat is a site with residents predominantly migrants, that have continued to live there for generations now.  This culturally diverse settlement is primarily involved in  live-work kind of lifestyle and has adopted various ways in their houses to meet their needs. The project focuses on including tangible and intangible aspects that would facilitate their lifestyle in the housing keeping opportunities to alter spaces in controlled order, open to the residents. The project has also emphasized on creating coexisting spaces proportionally spread on the site for community engagement and participation of residents in activities that would maximise use of spaces.
