Peri-urban to Urban | Memnagar, Ahmedabad

Cities grow and expand, very rapidly, the villages located in the surrounding often come under the influence of urbanization and pressures, depending on the direction and intensity of the growth parameter. Villages located today in the peri-urban area, tomorrow agglomerates within an Urban area. Ahmedabad also has grown on the lines of peri-urban village development. This process of transition creates varying urban and peri-urban characters of co-existence and transformation. The portfolio would discuss one such precinct i.e Memnagar. A precinct that looks towards being a suburb evolving from the peri-urban phase of development. It was in 1998 when it was agglomerated in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The physical network of streets, the growing population, mixed land uses, and infrastructure development, all these characteristics contribute to the inclusiveness of an urban neighborhood. A precinct from Bopal, Ahmedabad is included in the study, which is a peri-urban edge to the city, which very recently is in this process of development. For an external context Ashok Vihar II, a precinct from Gurugram. The city is selected as it also follows a similar growth pattern through the agglomeration of villages into the urban limits and growing itself as an economic center.
