Deciphering and Interpreting Styles

S12

Through quick ‘readings’ of the styles of objects and individuals, the exercise develops the ability to decipher and interpret styles in relation to context, culture, the visual language they employ. It addresses the need to identify the style of objects, spaces and individuals a professional comes into contact with, and off er responses to them. In some  cases, the process of deciphering is visual and  immediate, as with an architectural element, like a  door.

In other cases, the process involves research,  to understand how an individual’s style changes  over time, with transformations in their social role,  principles, philosophy, etc. Put together through mind maps, the data collected enables the students  to arrive at collages creating a space in which the individual would fit, stylistically. It also helps them  arrive at a cohesive interpretation of someone’s style,  which can be represented logically and creatively in designing a poster for an event associated with them.
